Securing Your Big Data

Many companies use Big Data for marketing and research, but do not necessarily master the basic concepts, especially from the point of view of security.

Most companies already have difficulty implementing these concepts, which makes the task very difficult. We need to identify who owns the results of Big Data processes, as well as raw data. Thus, the ownership of the data will be distinct from the ownership of the information, the raw data possibly belonging to the IT department while the departments will be responsible for the results.

As with all new technologies, security seems to be a concern after the fact, at best case.
Breaches of Big Data protection can be significant, and can harm the company reputation and have legal implications even more severe than currently.

A growing number of companies are using this technology to store and analyze petabytes of data, including Web logs, navigation data, and social networking content, in order to better understand their customers and activities.

Therefore, the classification of information becomes even more critical; and the information ownership should be determined to allow for acceptable classification.

Very few companies are likely to create a Big Data environment internally, hence the Cloud and Big Data will be inextricably linked. As most companies know, storing data in the Cloud does not relieve them of the responsibility to protect them, both legally and commercially.

The use of techniques such as attribute-based encryption may be necessary to protect sensitive data and apply access controls (for data attributes themselves rather than the environment in which are stored). Currently, many of these concepts are unknown to companies.
