The daily life of an aeronautical engineer

Among the aeronautics professions that make the most dream, that of engineer specialized in aeronautics figured prominently, immediately behind that of pilot... And yet, it is a job that does not exist! The term aeronautical engineer designates a qualification and not a function. This diploma gives access to many different professions. It is capable of designing and testing high-tech airplanes and helicopters: military aircraft for the armed forces or the manufacture of rockets, space launch vehicles, missiles and satellites.

A versatile professional

The engineer of today (and tomorrow) must be complete: with perfect technical knowledge, he must add real skills to communicate on his work as well as the fluent English. In these times of fusion and internationalization, he must also be ready to move everywhere in his country and the world, and this, several times during his career.

Marketing/sales engineer

Two close but different jobs, for the same mission: selling aircraft. The marketing engineer uses his skills to develop the contents of the brochures that praise the qualities of  manufacturer's aircraft. It can work on paper (catalogs), but also on new media such as the Internet. It also provides the conference presentation of the aircraft range for which it is responsible. It is therefore necessary to move wherever potential customers are. The commercial engineer conducts market research and negotiates with clients. He moves a lot to meet them, and also works as a team.

These two jobs call on a double competence: commercial on the one hand (argumentation, negotiation) and technical on the other hand (to sell an aircraft, it seems preferable to know how it works). This is why aircraft manufacturers are recruiting aeronautical engineers who know their subject matter and will be able to put forward a certain technical quality of the aircraft. It is a matter of efficiency and credibility.

Research engineer

The research engineer intervenes upstream of the chain to realize a new plane, unlike his colleague commercial engineer who intervenes downstream. He is involved in the development of tomorrow's planes, and he works a lot with computers of course.

Required skills to become an aeronautical engineer

- Sense of teamwork

- Autonomy and sense of initiative

- Rigor and capacity for analysis and synthesis

- English proficiency

- Good communicating

Training to become an engineer

A degree in aeronautics is the preferred way to become an engineer. Know that if companies can provide additional commercial or technical training internally, the possession of a double competence will be very appreciated during the recruitment.
The positions and duties of an engineer

The sales engineer and the marketing engineer can work in all companies of the aeronautical industry (aircraft manufacturers, engine manufacturers, equipment manufacturers...) as well as in the service and maintenance companies of the sector. The research engineer can work with aeronautical or space manufacturers, but also in research institutes.

Professional evolution of the aeronautical engineer

This position requires the prior acquisition of substantial experience within an aerospace company. It then allows to evolve towards framing functions.
