Financing your Study Abroad

Study abroad can be more or less expensive, depending on the chosen formula. Exchange programs, scholarships: here are some ways to help you financing your study abroad.

Financing your Study Abroad: The State helps you with bursary

It would be unfortunate if stays abroad were reserved only for an elite. This is why the State seeks to give a boost to those whose means are limited, in the first rank of which the bursaries.

If this is your case, you are entitled to several state subsidies, which can be combined with the Crous scholarships: the Erasmus allowance or the international mobility aid. The amount then depends on several factors: financial situation, year of study, project and destination.

However, as in the awarding of the Crous scholarships, there are criteria, in particular that of being enrolled in an institution under the Ministry of Higher Education, which is the case for universities and certain schools (especially engineers).

Integrated curriculum: negotiated with your school

Commerce, engineers, specialists: whatever the field of study, more and more schools offer (or even oblige) their students to spend one year of their studies abroad. They then take care of the administrative procedures (registration, housing, etc). For the student, it usually costs a typical year of schooling, but some destinations may incur additional fees.

If it is an exchange within the framework of Erasmus, you can apply for the Erasmus allowance, but not in the case of partnerships specific to the school. Some institutions offer scholarships or set up payment facilities: ask the school service.

Going solo: the course of the fighter

You can decide to leave alone, that is to say outside the framework of a university or a school. The choice of freedom! But in this case you will have to pay everything by yourself, registration fees, accommodation, food, transportation... and for certain destinations (USA, England, Australia, Asia...), fees can climb very high very fast!

You can find help from patrons and especially from private foundations, but they often fund projects that are close to or far from their goals. If your project is not only "academic" but a citizen, you can also request assistance from Youth Program in Action.
