With the emergence and evolution of IT tools and their strong presence in companies of all sizes, we are increasingly talking about information security. This term, more or less vague, is often attributed to a set of principles which are often poorly known and/or taken into account.
Information system and computer science system
It is common to confuse information system and computer science system, and by extension, their security. One must not forget that one is the tool of the other. The information system is generally defined as a grouping of structured elements and resources that enable the transmission, interpretation and storage of data. It must therefore be understood that this allows information to be routed from point A to point B, that the sender and the recipient understand each other and that the information is then retained.
The computer system is in fact the one that still fulfills the best these missions by means of electronic elements and telecommunications that are its components. While in the past we used natural elements, materials (such as paper and stone) to transmit and store information and animals to transmit them (carrier pigeon, messengers on horses), we use today computer systems to carry out these missions. The fact that it is the most efficient tool to accomplish this task made today, we often talk about information systems to talk about computer systems and vice versa. It is for this reason that we are talking today about the information system security, the information system being mainly composed of the computer system but not only.
Why securing information?
Information is today the sap of the company. This is what makes both its strength and its existence. Files, databases, work and production methods, employee records and industrial information are all pieces of information that make up the structure and base of a company. This is its intellectual capital, or rather informational capital. Any loss of information can be a fatal blow to a company or even a nation.
If this information were to be lost, stolen or to fall into the hands of another company, the data would no longer have any reason to exist because it would no longer be exclusive. Information today has value for its unique and exclusive side for a company. It is therefore in the interest of the company to protect its information assets.
